Included in this lot are five original Carl Tolpo Yellowstone sketches. Carl Tolpo was born in Ludington, Michigan in 1901. During the course of his career, he established his reputation as a portrait, genre, and landscape painter, as well as a portrait and figure sculptor. As a painter, his works in fine oil portraiture particularly include State portraits and landscape oil paintings of the western USA, mostly the Yellowstone Park region. His works is on display in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The first sketch in this series was drawn on August 12, 1948, 11-1pm and 1-2pm. This sketch is titled "Blue Shadow" and depicts the waterfall at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone; Tolpo wrote "a shadow" under shaded spots in the sketch. The second sketch was also done on August 12, 1948, but at 5:30 pm. This sketch is also of The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, including the waterfall, but the view is from farther back. On the top right of this sketch, Tolpo wrote what looks like "6pm too late? This night made shadows", referencing his shadow sketch that he drew earlier that day. The third sketch is similar to the previous one, but is slightly more faded. This sketch is a distanced view of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone; Tolpo wrote "Lots of grey clouds", "Rainbow", and "Clouds" within the sketch to help suggest what to paint in future oil paintings. On the top right corner of the sketch, Tolpo wrote "28-53, 830-230am". In the fourth sketch, Tolpo sketched a closer side view of the falls at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. On the bottom left corner of this sketch is signed "Yell Gr Cany Aug 8-55 C.T. Mon 1130am". The final sketch in this series was made after the lithographs of Grand Canyon and Lower Falls of Yellowstone were published in 1953. Tolpo explains the sketch in the bottom right corner, stating " Yel Gr Canyon looking E. of Red Rock. 2pm Aug 27-65 Carl Tolpo Camped extreme north of Canyon Camp". The first four sketches measure 5" by 8". The final sketch measures 10 3/4" by 8 1/4".
