This is an original authentic 1903 Charles M. Russell chromolithograph titled, “The Custer Fight” published by Charles Scribner. The piece is signed and dated in the lower left, “CM Russell (Buffalo Skull) 1903 in the plate. The Custer Fight is a terrific depiction of Custer’s Last Stand (also referred to as the Battle of the Little Bighorn and Battle of the Greasy Grass) from the Indians point of view as Russell was sympathetic to the Indians and unlike Remington did not paint to glorify the U.S. Cavalry with Custer’s men being barely visible through the battle’s smoke. This rare original chromolithograph was done during the lifetime of Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926). C.M. Russell is Montana’s finest artist and the most renowned and well-known cowboy artist of the 19th and 20th Century. This piece was published and copyrighted by Charles Scribners Sons of New York and printed by Grignard & Co. The artwork is marked at the bottom left, “COPYRIGHT 1905 CHARLES SCRIBNERS SONS N.Y.” and lower right, “A GRIGNARD & COMPANY, N.Y.”. These chromolithographs are the closest original piece to a true painting and are increasingly rare with only one The Custer Fight being offered on the public market which sold for $6,000 at Santa Fe Art Auction (shown w/ premiums). The piece has been professionally framed showing a wonderful solid wood antique frame. Provenance: From a large western art collection in New York, the collector stated that from his 30 years of collecting he found this example being the most difficult to find. From the same collection as the example sold by Santa Fe Art Auction as stated above. The visible art area is measured 17”x11.25” and the frame is 25.75”x20.75”. The piece shows overall good condition for its 114 year old age showing bright original coloring and detail with crisp edges and the only visible age being the slight spotting at the top.
