Featured in this lot is this original painting done by Matias Gonzalez Chavajay titled, "Mercado Atihon" (Atihon Market) circa 1987. Matias was born in Guatemala, in 1959. As a child, he would accompany his parents to the coast to gather coffee, and during this time, he abandoned his education in favor of painting, learning from his older brother Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay. Matias' technique resembles Mariano's, although his paintings appear less serious due to his naive depiction of people. This painting shows a scene at the Atihon Market, where hundreds of people gather for what appears to be a party or ceremony. Groups can be seen lighting candles as others carry supplies and goods around the large gathering of people. The piece is signed in the bottom left hand corner in yellow paint reading, "Matias Gonzalez Chavajay" and shows the title and date in the bottom right hand corner in yellow paint reading, "Mercado Atihon 87". The piece is not framed but shows good condition for its age and handling over the years. It measures 13" L x 17 7/8" W x 3/4" D and weighs 1 pound and 2 ounces.
