Offered in this lot is an original water color painting by Navajo artist Steven (Stephen) Mitchell. The artist would use Stephen and Steven to sign his work, but the "S" was always done as a double line through it. S. Mitchell’s works show bright colors with Navajo meanings behind the subjects. This painting is called "Gathering Herbs for the Sing". Herbs and song are closely entwined in Native American culture. For example, an herb would not cure an illness unless the proper song was sung with it and vice versa. The piece is on thick paper with a mat around it. The visible art measures 19 1/2" X 15" and the mat measures 23 1/4" X 18 3/4". The mat has some water damage to the lower right corner, but the art appears free from damage.
