This is an original watercolor painting by Crow Montana artist Leland Stewart (1955-2021) which is titled, “Uncle Buffalo”. Leland Stewart who passed away in 2021 was a Montana native, a member of the Crow Nation, Whistling Water Clan and the High Hawk Society. He graduated from the Institute of the American Indian Arts in 1975. Stewart's artwork was featured in in Montana fine art galleries and beyond. This painting shows half of the head of a Great American Bison Buffalo with the horn having a three stripe design and at the background a sunlight abstract pattern. The painting also shows three geometric “blanket strip” like designs with three Crow polychrome parfleche war shields shown. The piece exhibits Stewart’s unique style of bright, vivid colors and personal interpretation of his Native American Indian heritage. Many of Stewart’s works can be found at the Sam Terakedis Fine Art & Jewelry Gallery. Some examples of his art have been priced at $6,200 for Two Sisters in the Bear Paws, $5,500 for Uncle Buffalo, and $6,000 for The Visitor. This example is of a large size such as the above paintings. Leland Stewart’s work has been in high demand since his work has been on permanent display at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana. The piece is signed in the lower right corner "Leland Stewart 2019". As he has passed away his works are increasingly hard to come by. The condition of this watercolor is good with no obvious signs of damage to the art and the frame only shows minor wear to the wood but otherwise shows a good overall condition. The measurements of this watercolor is 26 1/4" x 23 1/2" and the visible artwork measures 17 1/2" x 15 1/4". The collective weight of this frame watercolor is 6lb 14oz.
