The lot features an exceptional and rare Central Plains ball head war club attributed to the Otoe Native American Indians. The war club dates to circa 1800 and has an outstanding craftsmanship showing an artful appearance with a prominent curved design which culminates in the spherical round burl root ball head. The war club tomahawk also has a distinct median ridge that runs the entirety of the club, an attribute which has been found on various authentic examples. The entire club has been artistically accented by patterns of solid brass square shank trade tacks, the trade tacks also are seen running the outer and inner edge of the handle as well as at the gripping area and the end. The war club shows the correct patina and detailed craftsmanship to be of such an early authentic age as it has been attributed, including a rich deep chocolate patina. There are minor worm holes, dings and nicks from proper age and use. Provenance: The piece was purchased from the renowned author and collector John Baldwin by Mark Francis in the early 2000’s and then later sold into the personal collection of Tom Hardy of Indiana. John Baldwin authored such important reference books as “Tomahawks, Pipe Axes: Of the American Frontier”, “Pipe Bags, Tobacco Bags: Of the American Frontier”, “Indian War Clubs of the American Frontier” along with two other books about the knives and bows/arrows of the American Frontier and is considered one of the most premier collectors and knowledges of his day. This is possibly one of the best ball head war clubs that has been offered for sale showing outstanding trade tack designs, an exquisite curved patter and authentic original age and provenance. The war club tomahawk measures 22.5”L and shows a 2.5”W head. The piece dates to the early 19th Century.
