The lot features a polychrome painted buckskin covered parfleche rawhide shield and cover with Pawnee style design. The piece exhibits an Indian brain tanned buckskin material stretched over a large parfleched rawhide Buffalo hide center disk with old faded polychrome painted design in green, black and red. There are two sections of long Indian hide fringe strips attached. The back has the original arm and shoulder strap still attached. The paint shows a thin green crescent moon like shape at the top with four claw bear paw symbols in black below showing a black spot at the center with long black line, across the bottom a half circle of red with dotted black line below. The back shows a nice dark patina with some slight drying of the hide. Pawnee Relics are exceedingly rare in the collecting community. The shield is in the style and manner of other Pawnee examples with correct paint, material, and symbols of documented examples but the age, origin and originality of the piece is unknown. Measures overall 17 1/2 inches in diameter. Good condition.
