This is a rare animal effigy steer war club from the Penobscot Native American Indians and dating to the early 1900's. The Penobscot (Panawahpskek) indigenous people of Northeastern United States and Canada are best known for thier burl figural war clubs. These war clubs were typically made from solid wood with the head being either burl, root burl or highly compressed wood crotch. The heads typically have figural carvings of human faces with few, such as this example, being of animal figures. Along with the carvings the root branches are left intact and sometimes sanded to a spear point. These formidable weapons would also have a notch carved into the end of the handle. This example whose a large wide steer or cow head carved design with rich dark wood and worn tapering handle having a wide carved pommel notched end. Provenance: Form a large American Indian collection in Minden, Nevada. Measures overall 30"L by 9"W x 6"W.
