This is an original authentic Wabanaki Confederacy Native American Indian hand woven sewing basket dating to circa 1900-1930. The Wabanaki Confederacy includes the principal nations of Mi'kmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, Abenaki and Penobscot. The basket is hand woven from ash splints and sea grass with aniline dyed internal accents. The basket would have been woven by the Wabanaki Indians and sold to the Amish Women of the Northeast coast. The basket shows an outstanding craftsmanship and has an unassuming appearance when closed, due to the Amish religion of modesty, but when opened shows such bright colors as red, blue, green/blue and natural. The basket has been finely preserved during its long existence with little to no damage. Measures when closed overall 9.5" in diameter by 2.5" H.
