Featured in this lot is this rare, Qajar Era (1789-1925) hand-copied Persian Nasta'liq Script Divan of Saib Tabrizi (Mirza Muhammad ali Saib, 1601-1677), one of the greatest masters of Persian poetry in the 17th century. Saib Tabrizi was a very influential poet who was renowned for his complex metaphors, philosophical analysis, and topics influenced by Sufism. His poetry, which covers topics like morality, love, and life's fleeting nature, is displayed in its conventional style, with poems contained within well-organized panels. The creative and literary magnificence of Persian calligraphy is reflected in this exquisitely designed book, which is embellished with traditional illuminated headings, elaborate marginalia, and exquisite Nasta'liq lettering. Persian poetry was a major component of literary culture, and scribes and academics often re-examined and reproduced the works of well-known poets such as Saib Tabrizi, Hafez, and Rumi. This manuscript appears to be a 18th-19th century hand-copied version of Saib Tabrizi’s Divan, produced for a noble or scholarly audience. The style of calligraphy (Nasta’liq), the marginalia and the illumination techniques strongly suggest it was created during the Qajar era (1789–1925), when Persian poetry was still highly revered and manuscripts were often custom-made for collectors. It has been rebound in a green/brown leather cover with gold gilt design and lettering reading, "Arabic Manuscript". It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years such as slight tears, foxing and staining to the interior pages. It measures 8 3/4" L x 5 1/4" W x 1/4" D and weighs under 6 ounces.
