Featured in this lot is this Pima Akimel O'odham polychrome basket circa 1910-1920. The basket features a wonderfully and professionally crafted bear grass construction with willow splints. The basket shows a finely woven specimen with geometric patterns around the side walling of the basket and to the center of the basket with a star configuration. Pima or Akimel O'odham, North American Indians traditionally lived along the Gila and Salt Rivers in Arizona, U.S., in what was the core area of the prehistoric Hohokam culture. The Pima, who speak a Uto-Aztecan language and call themselves the “River People,” are usually considered to be the descendants of the Hohokam. The Pima People are well known for their basket weaving craftsmanship. The condition of this Pima woven basket is good with some wear from age and discoloration to that weave due to age but otherwise shows a good overall condition. The measurements of this basket is 2 3/4" x 12 1/2" x 12 3/4". The collective weight of this basket is 10oz.
