Featured in this lot is an Original Plains Indians Handmade Coyote Antler Medicine Rattle Stick, circa late century. This medicine stick features a coyote leg handle with coyote fur at the intersection with an antler top. The antler branches are decorated with elk dew claws, trade beads, and metal beads all attached with leather strips. Coyote elements such as the leg, are used to invoke the animal's spirit, known for its intelligence, trickster nature, and connection to transformative medicine. In many Native traditions, the coyote holds great power, associated with both creation and mischief, making its parts potent for spiritual protection or "good medicine". "Coyote leg" or "coyote bone" sticks are meant to carry the spiritual energy of the coyote, often utilized in healing rituals. For Plains Indian tribes, a medicine stick (also called a spirit or prayer stick) is a sacred ceremonial tool used by shamans and medicine men for healing, protection, and spiritual connection. These sticks are deeply symbolic, often representing the connection between humans and the natural world. Shamans carry these sticks to evoke healing spirits and guide spiritual journeys or vision quests. Some versions, like "rattle sticks," produce sound to aid in cleansing and purifying ceremonies. They are used to carry prayers to the Creator, sometimes by being planted in the ground near spiritual sites. This medicine rattle stick is in nice condition throughout, the coyote fur is in nice condition with its stunning colours. Measures 18.5L x 7.5"W, weight 14oz.
