Featured in this lot is this Pre Columbian pestal/ chisel and obsidian drill. There is two utensils in this collection. The first is a polished stone pestel with a cutting edge that shows a oblong design that is sharpened at one of the ends of the pestal. The second item is a sharpened rib obsidian drill that shows black coloration that has been used with wear to one of the ends and a chisel like sharpend end on the other. Ancient cultures located south of the present-day United States border are referred to as Pre-Columbian cultures. These people lived in the time before the arrival of Columbus. The three most notable Pre-Columbian civilizations were those of the Aztec, Maya, and Inca. The condition of this pair of artifacts is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage, there is some wear to the obsidian drill from use but otherwise is well preserved. The measurements of these artifacts are 4 1/4" x 1 3/8" x 1 3/8" and 2 7/8" x 3/4" x 5/8". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. The collective weight of this collection is U6Oz.
