This is an exceptional piece of Pre-Historic Casas Grandes Ramos polychrome painted pottery olla dating to circa 1130-1450 C.E. collected in the 1940’s. Casas Grandes (Spanish for Great Houses; also known as Paquime) is a prehistoric archaeological site in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Casas Grandes (Paquime) is one of the largest and most complex Mogollon culture sites in the region. Settlement began after 1130 CE and would see the larger buildings developed into multi-storied dwellings after 1350 CE. The community was abandoned approximately 1450 CE. Casas Grandes is regarded as one of the most significant Mogollon archaeological zones in the northwestern Mexico region, linking it to other sites in Arizona and New Mexico in the United States, and exhibiting the expanse of the Mogollon sphere of influence. This example was said to have been collected in the 1940’s and is from an old Native American pottery and artifacts collection. The pottery olla shows hand pierced holes on either side of the rim opening and the original polychrome painted geometric design in red and black showing classic, correct Casas Grandes Ramos designs. The piece is well kept with no apparent cracks, much of the original paint and only some small chips around the opening. The measurements of this pottery olla is 5" x 5" x 5". The collective weight of this pottery vessel is 1lb 2oz.
