The Qing Dynasty was one of China's most iconic and culturally significant dynasties, known for its rich history and artistic achievements. Shiwan ware is Chinese pottery from kilns located in the Shiwanzhen Subdistrict of the provincial city of Foshan, near Guangzhou, Guangdong. It forms part of a larger group of wares from the coastal region known collectively as "Canton stonewares". Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. This Shiwan Ginger Pot Jar is hexagonal, exhibiting a variation of colours from blue to turquoise to jade green. Adorning the surface of this vase is a delicate and intricate floral design. Flowers and plants have long been symbolic in Chinese art, often representing themes of beauty, nature, and renewal. The jar vase is crafted from glazed earthenware, showcasing the mastery of traditional Chinese pottery techniques. The green glaze adds an elegant touch to the piece.
