Presented in this lot is an early Guan Yin or Kuan Yin Carved Nephrite Jade Figurine Statue, with grey and tawny inclusions. In Chinese mythology, Guan Yin (??) is the goddess of mercy and considered to be the physical embodiment of compassion. Nephrite is derived from lapis nephriticus, for the traditional belief in its power to heal the kidneys and loins. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including of Persian and Afghani artifacts. Guan Yin holds a vase, said to relieve the thirst of devotees. She’s also believed to act as an bridge that connects ordinary people with deeply intellectual and spiritual ideas. She holds a water vase in her right hand, The vase is one of the eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune and contains the nectar of life. In Buddhism, a Guan Yin figurine in your household to attract compassion, good fortune, and strength. This nephrite jade Guan Yin figurine statue is in nice condition, the muted nephrite jade colouring has grey and tawny inclusions. Slight chipping observed. Measures 2.25"W x 5"H x 1"D approximate, weight is 6oz.
