Presented in this lot is a Rare 1850s Advertising Broadside H. E. Spielman, Hagerstown, MD. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. Spielman's was the "Largest Boot and Shoe House In Western Maryland" and made use of a well-known stock image of the elephant in boots carrying a banner with its trunk and tail. The image had roots in the 1830s, possibly earlier and for quite some time was also associated with the slogan, "Clear the Tracks" which has been attributed to legendary frontiersman, politician and Alamo hero Davy Crockett. The broadside features the boot shod elephant carrying a banner, "No. 11 WASHINGTON ST.". A saddle blanket advertisement is draped over the elephant, "I will go back to H. E. Spielman's For Shoes, again, He Is THE MAN Of All Others." Below the elephant is written, "H. E. SPIELMAN, No. 11 Washington Street, HAGERSTOWN, MD Largest Boot and Shoe House in Western Maryland. WHOLESALE AND RETAIL. TERMS CASH, and Prices Lower than any other Housse in the State. PARTICULAR ATTENTION PAID TO CUSTOM WORK. REPAIRING DONE WITH NEATNESS AND DISPATCH. LADIES AND GENTS GUMS.
