This is an exceedingly rare original circa 1890’s Plains Indian Ghost Dance ledger art drawing showing a Battle of the Little Bighorn image of a warrior standing over a mutilated US 7th Cavalry Soldier; from a large ledger art collection. The piece is done on an original Niles Hig. Oct. 31st 1870’s signed ledger page and shows original 19th-century Plains Indian ledger artwork done in pencil and colors pencil. The piece shows a Plains Indian Warrior on horseback, the horse being fully war painted in yellow with a hand print and spotted design, holding a bow and arrow with a large feathered lance spear at the center. There is a US 7th Cavalry solider who has been killed and mutilated on the ground, hand and foot cut off with arrow in his belly, his US pouch and revolver on the ground. There is a large Buffalo Bison skull with red eyes and above that a US 7th Cavalry Guidon Flag with broken pole and arrows in the flag, representing defeat. There is a large four-point morning star a classic Ghost Dance Movement symbol in the top corner. The bottom is signed with a rattlesnake, likely the signature. The piece is from the same collection as the Blemmingham Ledger book collection, the very same as the 1890-1891 Buffalo Kill Ledger sold in 2022 by NAAC for $2,016 and the 1879 Cleveland and Mahoning Railway Ledger drawing that sold in NAAC’s March 2024 auction for $1250 (shown w/ bp). The original ledger is dated to circa 1879, the artwork appears to be of an older age but exact age is unknown. There is some folding, cracking and tears but displays beautifully. Measures overall 18” by 11” when laid out and 3 7/8” by 9” when folded.
