Presented in this lot is a Rare Charles Lancaster Oak Leather and Brass Gun Case, circa 1870-1890. Charles Lancaster was a prominent 19th-century gunmaker who established his business in 1826 and is credited with inventing the improved copper primer gun. Along with being recognized with Royal Warrants, Lancaster made guns and rifles for several notable clients. One of the most famous clients was Annie Oakley, America’s famous trick shooter known as ‘Little Miss Sure Shot”. This oak leather gun case has a fitted interior is lined with green baize bearing paper label, "CHAs. LANCASTER, Gun Manufacturer, No. 151 New Bond Street, LONDON Inventor of the Copper Primer Gun." Label has a Royal Warrant Coat of Arms bearing the words, "Dieu et Mon Droit" at the top. Leather top features stamp, "R.B. ORTON HALL WESTMORLAND" above a round brass cartouche. Green baize lining exhibits wear from use, oak shows signs of moisture swelling, leather cover displays rich patina, scratches, staining and scuffing from use & wear. Leather has separated from left end, leather handle and straps replaced. Brass corner caps, lock mechanism, hinges and strap D rings exhibit rich patina. Key not included. Measures 9.25"W x 33.5"L x 4.75"D, weight is 14lb, 10oz.
