In this lot is a rare collection of eleven black and white, F. J. Haynes photo postcards, unused. These cards are on a cream paper. In the lower left corner is the location of the photo and on the lower right corner it says "Haynes-Photo collo type Made in Germany. These post cards are believed to be pre-1898. F. Jay Haynes first photographed Yellowstone National Park in 1881 to publicize the Northern Pacific Railroad. Encouraged by Superintendent Philetus Norris—who wanted to promote park visitation by helping Yellowstone gain international recognition for its natural wonders—Haynes’ photography promoted both tourism in the West and the idea of a national park. The postcards measure 5 1/2" X 3 1/2" and are in very good condition.
