This is an exceedingly rare Hopi Native American Indian Kachina doll depicting a Spanish Catholic Missionary or Priest. The kachina is constructed of solid Cottonwood and shows a polychrome pigment mineral painted surface. The dolls shows large hame dome or half moon carved feet with a cylindrical carved head and rounded arms and hands tucked into the stomach area. The piece shows a figure with a thick dark blue beard and is wearing a red shirt with blue pants. Around the neck of the human figure is a necklace made of religious crosses. The Kachina is wearing a two tiered crown that appears original, but has been modernly stained or touched up. Kachina's featuring a Missionary or Priest are not only unusual, but non-existant with this being possibly the only known example. The piece shows the correct craftsmanship and quality of other Hopi Kachina's and is believed to be an authentic rare example dating to the 19th Century. The piece does shows some wear, chips and breaks, but overall displays well. The kachina measures 2.5" wide and 11.25" tall.
