Particularly fine condition Remington Model 1889 hammer double barrel shotgun in extremely rare 16 gauge. Considered one of the finest shotguns of the period, the Remington Model 1889 proved popular through the 1890s. Almost the entire production was 10 and 12 gauge with very few manufactured in 16 ga. Offered from plain to fancy grades, this example with serial number 94082 sports a checkered pistol grip stock and forend, case colored action and fancy Damascus barrels with solid rib. The forend also has a fancy inletted steel release lever. Frequently, these pre-20th century shotguns are found in very hard used and often abused condition. This outstanding example still retains some good aged case colors on the upper and lower receiver as well as on the lock plates. Finding any original case color is unusual and desirable. The high grade Damascus patterns are vivid and run the full length of the 30” barrels with excellent sharp matting on the rib. The top of the barrels in front of the breech is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, NY USA” and each side lock plate are also marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO.” The stock and forend show fine checkering with the forend displaying a fancy factory inletted horn forend cap. The wood is solid and in generally excellent condition. The butt stock is fitted with the correct factory hard rubber checkered butt plate with the attractive Remington logo embossed in the upper center. The action is extremely tight with no play between the barrels and receiver. Both hammers function perfectly with their corresponding triggers. Amazingly, both bores are mirror bright with no pitting or corrosion, which is unusual for any shotgun from this period. One of the most well-built and expensive shotguns of the 1890s period, the Remington was considered a top choice for any wealthy sportsman with deep pockets. During this time, America was flooded with fairly inexpensive European made shotguns. Sold through such catalogs as Sears & Roebuck, the average farmer, rancher, hunter and pioneer could have a durable shotgun… but not a Remington, which was in a class by itself and out of reach for most Americans of the time. These Remington made double guns are quite scarce now and are rarely found in the state of preservation of this example. Finding one in limited production 16 gauge is nearly impossible, especially in this fine condition with mirror bright bores! This is an Antique Firearm, NO FFL.
