Remington No.1 Rolling Block Commercial 20 ga. Shotgun. Remington made military rifles, sporting rifles and a very limited number of shotguns on the famed single shot Rolling Block action. Of the shotguns, a less expensive version was manufactured using left over military contract parts- mainly the stock with curved military butt plate and action with round receiver ring. The higher quality model, like this one, was made to be a shotgun from the beginning, using only new parts. The high quality version featured a shotgun butt stock with smooth steel butt plate. The receiver top was “fluted” to better see the sighting bead at the muzzle of the barrel. Made during the 1870s-1890s, this version was relatively expensive as depicted in the catalogs of the time and was by no means considered an "economy” model. This example shows very fine walnut in the butt stock and forend and contains only the most minor of handling marks. Wood to metal fit is tight as is the action. The hammer displays a strong safety half-cock. The receiver has aged an attractive dark patina and retains fine Remington address and 1870s patent markings on the upper tang. The approx. 28” “fluid steel” barrel shows fine lightly aged blue with the front sighting bead intact. The bore shows typical light surface corrosion mainly ahead of the chamber. Black powder shooting enthusiasts still use and admire the Remington Rolling Block shotguns as being exceptionally strong and durable shooting guns. Both types of Remington Rolling Block shotguns typically saw hard and extended use east and west of the Mississippi River. Finding one today that is not battered or abused is difficult. This high grade model has a particularly fine appearance. This shotgun weighs 6lbs 4oz. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
