Classic Native American used and decorated Remington Rollingblock rifle. This example displays great age and frontier usage. This was originally a military rifle in caliber .43 Spanish (which is basically the same as the famed .44-77 “Buffalo Cartridge”) and subsequently altered for horseback use. The Remington Rolling Block single shot rifle was the standard arm in Mexico and found favor with frontiersmen and Native Americans especially in the Southwestern U.S. Ammunition for this caliber in this area during the latter half of the 19th century was easiy to acquire and was powerful enough for any Western use- from hunting the largest of game, like buffalo and elk to self defense. This example shows several rows of brass tacks in the butt stock and on the forend. The butt stock has the standard steel butt plate that is actually worn through to the wood of the stock on the top rear portion! The tacks themselves display a very dark and aged patina that blends perfectly with the aged quality of the wood. There is a rawhide repaired crack at the wrist of the stock that also shows great age and wear. The forend is likewise fastened to the barrel with wrapped strips of rawhide shrunk to fit. The forend has been shortened from the full length military style and the barrel has been cut to a more manageable 22” carbine length. Metal surfaces show a deep aged patina with no indication of cleaning. The rear sight is of the original Remington military style and shows some battering from years of use. The action still functions and while the bore is dark and somewhat rough, still shows good rifling. The butt stock also retains the inletted sling swivel base that shows the same dark patina as the tacks and leather. This is a truly remarkable example typical of the Southern Plains of the 1870s-1890s period. Winderful history and visual appeal in this fine artifact. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
