Remington rare “Type 1” Rolling Block 20 gauge shotgun with special order extra long 34” barrel. The Remington Rolling Block rifles and shotguns were considered state of the art in single shot long arms during the late 1860s to the turn of the 20th century. Remington Rolling Block rifles are more widely known than their line of Rolling Block shotguns. Interestingly, the 1877 Remington catalog lists these shotguns at $55 which was more than many Rolling Block rifles. Remington made “Type 1” and “Type 2” shotguns. The “Type 2” was a less expensive model made from surplus military stocks and parts- they are easy to spot as they have curved musket style butt plates and stocks. The “Type 1” was the premier model made using new shotgun butt plates and stocks. The receiver rings on these where the barrel screws in is fluted on top to better view the front sight bead when shouldering and sighting the shotgun. Standard barrel lengths on these were typically 30” with 32” an option. This example was
special ordered with the rare long 34” barrel of which only a few are known. The butt stock with smooth steel butt plate is in excellent condition with very tight wood to metal fit and shows one almost imperceptible chip repair at the upper right tang and receiver juncture. The original forearm is fine with tight wood to metal fit. The Rolling Block action is tight with a strong half-cock safety on the hammer. The receiver is a fine, uncleaned aged patina and retains good patent and Remington address markings on the upper tang. The barrel blue is lightly aged and mixing slightly with plum. The front sighting bead is intact. The bore shows normal light scattered corrosion and the barrel is not Damascus, but
solid steel construction. Many of these older, but safe, shotguns are still being shot using readily available brass cases and black powder, which require no special tools to load. The Remington Rolling Block shotguns are all seldom seen on the collector market today with the finer “Type 1” increasingly difficult to find. This special order long barrel example is exceptional. This shotgun weighs 6lbs 10oz. Serial Number: NSN. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
