Offered in this lot is a pair of Vintage Roseville Pottery Candle Holders, Gardenia design, circa Mid-Century Modern. Both candle holders have the original Roseville raised mark with USA and pattern/shape number 651 on the base, circa 1950. Gardenia is a late period pattern introduced by Roseville Pottery in 1950. Standard colors included brown, green, and gray. Although Roseville advertised 40 shapes, the factory stock pages show 39. Gardenia shapes include vases, jardinieres, pedestals, baskets, ewers, cornucopias, bowls, window boxes, wall pockets, bookends, and candlesticks. Artist mark appears on both bases as well. The original Roseville Pottery Company was founded in Roseville, Ohio in the latter part of the 19th century, 1890. Over the next 60 years, they grew to become one of the largest producers of American art pottery, and became a cornerstone of central Ohio business and jobs. Their contributions to the civic community and a wide variety of charitable causes became legendary. Unfortunately, in 1953 economic conditions led to their bankruptcy. In the 1970's collectors rediscovered their works, and a new generation discovered a new passion for the art of vintage Roseville Pottery. Many books and guide were published, and their rarest works were coveted by enthusiasts. This interest continues to this day with a wide variety of clubs and organizations. Since the company closed in the 1950s, Roseville pottery has seen two distinct revivals: one with Baby Boomers in the 1970s, and again in the late 1990s and early 2000s during the Mission Style revival. The candle stick holders are in good overall condition, no marring noted. Each measure 2"H x 3.5" base diameter, candle opening is .75" diameter.
