Edward Latimer Beach Jr. (1918-2002) was a United States Navy submarine officer and author. During World War II, he participated in the Battle of Midway and 12 combat patrols, earning 10 decorations for gallantry, including the Navy Cross. The book describes World War II submarine warfare in the Pacific Ocean. The story is told as a transcript of a Navy tape recording by Commander Edward J. Richardson, and explores themes of honor, loyalty, courage, endurance, and vengeance during wartime. The title refers to "silent running", a submarine stealth tactic.
