Presented in this lot is a Rare First Edition of "Life of General William Tecumseh Sherman", S. L. Hart's Personal Copy, Signed, 1891. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. The book was given to Hart by his wife's brother A. A. Nugent. Both Nugent and Hart's son Charles (C. P.) signed and dated the front endpaper, 1891. Note on endpaper, "See Battle of Shiloh page 175". The page in question includes narrative describing the details of a boat crossing the Tennessee River. On the boat with three privates is a Signal Corps Lieutenant; evidently that lieutenant was S. L. Hart of the Wisconsin 10th Infantry Regiment that was attached to the 9th Brigade, 3rd Division of the Army of the Ohio, commanded by Major General Don Carlos Buell. S. L. Hart's signature is on the side margin of the page. Samuel Lombard "Lum" Hart (1830-1893) was a very highly regarded and skilled gunsmith over his ten years in Tombstone. If gun repairs were needed, Hart's on Freemont Street was the place to go, located just a short distance from the famous Fly Photography studio and right next door to the O.K. Corral. On Oct. 26th of 1881 Hart, while working in his store, would be one of the relatively few witnesses to the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral that made Tombstone and the Earp's famous. S.L. was entrusted with both basic repairs as well as also sought out for his special Colt pistols. Some of Hart's more notable clients were US Marshal Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, outlaw Ike Clanton and Buckskin Frank Leslie. It has been said that the legacy of S.L. Hart as gunsmith to the cowboys, gamblers, lawmen, and gunfighters of Tombstone cannot be over estimated. Today a firearm with the "S.L. Hart" stamp is almost priceless. The Rare First Edition by W. Fletcher Johnson has over 30 illustrations and maps.
