Featured in this lot are five pieces of Native American Santa Clara blackware (black-on-black) pottery pieces from the 20th century. Santa Clara blackware pottery, originating over 300 years ago in New Mexico, is renowned for its polished, glossy black finish achieved through specialized reduction firing. Historically utilitarian, it evolved into an art form in the early 20th century, characterized by deep, carved (sgraffito) designs and, occasionally, black-on-black matte styling. The first in this set shows a stylized bird with an identical, smaller bird to match it. The third piece shows a shallow bowl with matte black Southwest designs set in the center. The fourth piece is a small bowl with no designs on it, with the fifth and final piece showing a skinny shape, resembling a pen / pencil holder. The larger bowl is marked on the bottom but is illegible, while the smaller bird is marked with a string of numbers. The pieces show good condition overall with slight wear present and repaired damage on the smaller bird. The pieces measure from 5 3/4" L x 4 7/8" W x 2 5/8" H to 2" L x 1 3/8" W x 5/8" H. They have a collective weight of 1 pound and 4 ounces.
