Featured in this lot is a Savage & North model 1861 Navy ball and cap proto-double action revolver chambered in .36 Cal. The revolver was designed by Henry North and Edward Savage in 1860, with production beginning in 1861 and ending in 1862. The piece was manufactured by Savage Revolving Firearm Company, which produced only 23,000 pistols before closing with no relation to the later Savage Arms Company. The pistol displays a rare proto-double action system with a second trigger set beneath the fist and cocks the hammer when pulled. The revolver was used by a few Union and Confederate regiments, but never found wide use or recognition with the piece ending up as more of a concept than firearm staple. The piece displays a 7" octagonal barrel, six-shot cylinder, double trigger system, walnut grips, and attached loading lever. The piece shows its original frame with the cylinder, barrel, hammer, triggers, grips, and some internal components replaced. The pistol shows limited mechanical function where the second trigger pulls back the hammer, but the hammer does not reliably lock in place. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
