Featured in this lot is this scarce 1857 first edition "Minnesota and Dacotah" by Christopher Columbus Andrews. This important 19th century travelogue was written by Christopher Columbus Andrews and published by Robert Farnham, Washington. This is a highly informative work containing the author's "Letters descriptive of a tour through the North-West." This first edition is largely indistinguishable from the second edition, issued in the same year and by the same publisher. Howe A-253 calls for a map, however is widely acknowledged that a map does not make its first appearance until the fourth edition. The present copy bears a faded inscription by Ebenezer Knowlton to Edward P. Fogg dated July 1st, 1865, at So. Montville was a Maine legislator who became an early member of the Republican Party and was a lifelong supporter of abolitionism and the temperance movement. Christopher Columbus Andrews (October 27, 1829 – September 21, 1922) was an American soldier, diplomat, newspaperman, author, and forester. During the Civil War, Andrews rose to the rank of brigadier general and at its close was brevetted as a major general. He originally enlisted as a private, but was commissioned captain in the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. Interested in scientific forestry, Andrews after the war worked to stir public sentiment for responsible logging and forest practices, but without much success until the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 burned several towns in east-central Minnesota, garnering widespread public attention. He maintained that proper forestry would renew the state's ravaged timberlands and make them fire-resistant. Eventually, leading foresters and companies began to implement Andrews' ideas and practices. He was Minnesota state Forestry Commissioner when the Baudette Fire of 1910 burned, further strengthening his argument for regulation of forestry. The condition of this scarce book is well preserved for its age with some slight wear to the outside leather wrapped cover and browning to the pages consistent with the age however it shows a solid spine condition and is overall well preserved. The measurements of this book is 7 5/8" x 4 7/8". The collective weight of this book is of this book is 10oz.
