This is an antique royal roe deer mount, originating from the renowned Schloss Eckartsau, circa October 16th, 1882. Schloss Eckartsau was a baroque hunting lodge of the Habsburg-Lorraine royal line starting with the ownership by the Bohemian Chancellor Franz Ferdinand Count Kinsky in 1720. Later to be acquired in 1760 by Emperor Francis Stephen, husband to the last, and sole female ruler of the Habsburg Dominion - Maria Theresa. In 1888 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, would visit the Schloss for a hunt, eventually to acquire the castle in 1897. After the assassination of the Archduke in Sarajevo in 1914, the castle once again changed hands to the heir presumptive Emperor Charles I, and his wife Princess Zita of Bourban-Parma. The castle would finally fall out of Habsburg-Lorraine ownership in 1919, when the royal family was exiled to Switzerland. The Schloss was frequently visited by European nobles, and dignitaries to join the royal family in a hunt. It was customary to mount the trophy, and label it with the date, or the name of the dignitary which took the animal. This mount reads "16 Ockbr - 1882". Overall, the mount shows very good condition, and is mounted to a contemporary custom bronze plaque, crafted to imitate the original Black Forest carved plaques typically seen accompanying these mounts. The mount measures 13 3/8" tall, 6 1/4" wide, and 6 5/8" deep from the mounting surface.
