For sale in this lot is a roe deer mount originating from the Schloss Eckartsau, circa 1873. Schloss Eckartsau was originally constructed as a medieval fortification, and was converted to a baroque hunting lodge by Count Franz Ferdinand von Kinsky in the first quarter of the 18th century. The palace was occupied by an incredible line of Austrian dignitaries - The first owner after Count Franz Ferdinand von Kinsky was Francis Stephan von Lothringen, husband to Maria Theresa - The sole female ruler of the Habsburg Dominion. The ownership of the castle would eventually transfer to Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1897, and after his murder, to Austria's last Imperial couple Charles I of Austria, and Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma. The castle which stayed in ownership of the Habsburg-Lorraine house for over a century, was host to many royal guests, including King Wilhelm II, the last King of Prussia, and the last Emperor or Kaiser of Germany. It was commonplace for these dignitaries to visit the palace for a hunt, and have a mount made to commemorate their trip. This mount is initialed "RN", and is mounted to a contemporary custom bronze plaque. Overall, the mount shows very-good condition. The piece measures 10 1/2" tall, 5" wide, and 5 5/8" deep from the mounting surface.
