Featured in this lot is this polychrome pottery jar, circa 1950's, from Acoma Pueblo artist Pauline Abeita. This bowl shows a good example of the traditional geometric pattern, following expert symmetry and showing a triangular border along the rim. The Acoma pueblo is best known for their unique pottery style and method, utilizing techniques which have been in practice since the Acoma establishment in 1150 A.D. Acoma pottery is emblematic of the lifestyle of the people who make it. It typically features thin walls, fluted rims, hand painted animal motifs, geometric patterns usually rendered in stark black and white or muted warm colors, and is unglazed — stylistic elements which collectively make Acoma pottery easily recognizable. The pottery vessel is signed “Acoma - New Mexico - Pauline Abeita”. The condition of this jar is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this pottery jar are 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 5".
