The lot features an original ball stone head skull cracker war club from the Sioux Native American Indian people and dating to the 19th Century. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The piece shows a solid wood haft handle that is covered in an Indian tanned hide. The hide shows wonderful original glass trade seed beadwork in chalk white, cobalt, red white-heart, and padre sky blue. The war club head shows a spherical shape and is covered in Indian tanned hide rawhide showing a red ocher mineral pigment star painted design that is accented by additional petit seed beadwork. The head is in a skull cracker style with the head being attached to the haft via two strips of parfleche rawhide, allowing the head to flap back and forth, gaining momentum when swung. The piece has some repairs and bead loss, but overall is a truly wonderful weapon. The handle, which is tightly wrapped in hide show a rich dark mellow patina along the gripping area from age and use. Measures overall 17 ½ inches in length with a 3 inch diameter head.
