Offered for sale in this lot is an original authentic ball head war club with brass spike from the Southern Plains Native American Indian people and dating to the 19th Century. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The 1800’s war club shows a solid wood construction all being carved from one piece of wood with a spherical root burl ball head. The war club features a unique gradual curved handle that flows nicely into the large ball head. The head shows four linear parallel carved lines that are accented by over 20 small solid brass and metal trade tacks. At the center of the club head shows a large four-sided brass spike with a rounded tip from use. The brass shows a rich dark and mellow patina that can only be found from much age. On the left side of the club near the head are five cut parallel notches, typical of kill marks. The end of the tomahawk war club shows a pierced or drilled hole that would have held a wrist throng or drop of feathers / beadwork. The head has a dark rich natural patina and a rich patina over the entire club, from much age and use. The war club shows a good overall condition and displays very well. The large four sided brass spike, which is a very uncommon and scarce addition to the piece, makes this a formidable weapon. Measures overall 22.25”L x 7”W x 3.5”D. The spike is 2 5/8”L and approximately ½”W at a diagonal. Very few of these early ball head spike war clubs have been brought to sale with some examples selling for such prices at auction as the following: $26,000 for the Western Great lakes Ball Head with Spike at Cowans 2011 sale, the similar Southern Plains Ball Head with Spike that sold for $3,000 at our 9/22/2018 sale, and the Great Lakes Ball Head that sold for $3,000 at Cowans 2009 sale.
