This is an excellent original albumen photograph from circa 1880’s of Brave Bear Hunkpapa Sioux Chief; it is said to be an unsigned F.J. Haynes, as seen on page 200 of “Following the Frontier with F.J. Haynes”. A Sioux called Brave Bear was hanged by U.S. Marshalls in Yankton, DT (Dakota Territory) in late 1882—the first Indian executed in Dakota for crimes against a white man. It is said that albumen cabinet cards, such as this, were popular collectibles and likely sold a few years after his death. The image shows more detail and finer condition than the D.F. Barry example listed in Cowan’s 2010 sale for $900. The Cowan’s example is a cabinet card marked by D.F. Barry Bismarck, Dakota Territory Oncapapa Sioux Chief Brave Bear with the same image. This example is in an early antique wood frame and is hand written on the back, “Albumen photo / “Brave Bear – Sioux” / unsigned F.J. Haybes / page 200, “Following / the Frontier with F.J. Haynes”. This is truly an incredible, rare, original 1880’s albumen photograph. Frame measures 11 5/8” by 9 5/8; the visible photograph area is 5.75” by 4 1/8”.
