The lot features an exceptional Sioux Native American Indian stone head skullcracker (skull cracker) war club dating to the 19th Century. This pre-1890 Indian Wars era piece shows a bi-point conal shaped hand carved and scrapped stone head secured to a stripped wood haft handle and secured by a wrapping of parfleche and the haft end being pressed into a carved hole in the bottom of the head. The handle is completely covered in parfleche rawhide which is sinew sewn and shows a red and green ocher mineral pigment dyed finish. The handle has exceptional patina from many honest years of age and use. At the bottom of the club shows a small original wrist throng belt loop. The piece comes with an original manila collection museum tag which is written in fountain pen ink, “Sioux War Club. South Dakota.” The piece is from the Sioux American Indians of South Dakota and is in overall well-preserved good condition. The top strap over the head is torn, but the head still can be held into place. Provenance: From one of the most prominent American Indian collections in Billings, Montana.
