Featured in this lot is this 1890 first edition of "Sir Henry Raeburn: A Selection from his portraits reproduced in photogravure by T. and R. Annan" with introduction and notes by William Ernest Henley. It was printed by T. and A. Constable in Edinburgh for the Royal Association for Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland circa 1890. Henry Raeburn, who was originally apprenticed to a goldsmith, showed remarkable artistic talent as a young man. In 1784, he relocated to London, where he met the renowned portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. He spent some time in Italy before returning to Edinburgh in 1787, when he began painting portraits of the wealthy, renowned, and influential people of his time. He was in high demand and received numerous awards, including being knighted by the King during his visit to Edinburgh in 1822. Sir Henry Raeburn died one year later. The book features fourteen photogravures from Sir Henry Raeburn's work throughout his years as an artist. The book is bound in a brown cloth hard cover showing an image and lettering in gold gilt reading, "Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland 1890 / Messrs J. P. B. Purves and Co. / Honorary Secretaries Valparaiso". The book shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage is present. Interior pages show good condition as well with no foxing present. The book measures 12 7/8" L x 10 3/8" W x 5/8" D and weighs 2 pounds.
