This is an exceedingly rare Smith and Wesson factory target sighted 32-20 caliber Hand Ejector Model 1905, 3rd Change revolver with factory S&W medallion pearl grips. There were a number of “Changes” in the .32-20 Hand Ejector Model 1905 series that was made until World War II. The 3rd Change occurred only from 1909-1915 in the serial range of 45201-65700. This example is serial numbered 46910 and is no doubt a first year, 1909 production revolver. Of the entire .32-20 Hand Ejector series, very few revolvers were specially fitted with adjustable target rear sights and target blade front sights. Almost all of these revolvers were produced with a simple grooved top strap above the cylinder for sighting. This same model was made in more numerous quantities in .38 Special caliber with examples in .32-20 scarce. Target sighted .32-20 revolvers are considered rare and desirable. This example has matching serial numbers on the frame (butt), cylinder and barrel. Next to the serial number on the butt is a five pointed star stamping indicating that this revolver was returned to S&W for refinishing. Under the grips, stamped on the side of the frame, is “2.15” indicating that this revolver was refinished by S&W in February of 1915. The revolver retains about all of the high polish blue finish and the mellow genuine pearl grips with “deep-dish” S&W medallions that fit perfectly and are not chipped or cracked (To S&W collectors these grips by themselves are worth a considerable sum especially in this excellent condition). All markings are legible -with the barrel address and patents on the top and “32 WINCHESTER CTG” (.32-20) on the side. Often the .32-20 caliber revolvers were paired with a Winchester or Marlin rifle chambered for the same cartridge. The .32-20 was considered an outdoorsman’s caliber and examples are usually found in very hard used and often abused condition. This one is mechanically excellent with fine bore showing sharp rifling. This is a most rare and attractive early 114 year old S&W double action revolver that is seldom seen in target variation with medallion pearl grips. Serial Number: 46910.
