For bidding in this lot is a fine example of the ever-popular Smith & Wesson Model 2, 3rd Change, Double-Action revolver, chambered for .38 S&W Caliber. This exceptional example utilizes a non-typical 5" barrel, top-break action with an automatic cartridge extractor, hard rubber "S&W" logo grips, 5-shot cylinder, and a fixed rear sight, paired with a blade front sight. The Model 2 .38 S&W was made in a total of five variations, the initial run consisted of 4000 revolvers in 1880, 2nd version was slightly improved, and ran a total of 115,000 firearms between 1880-84, 3rd variation spanned from 1884-95 and included 203,700 revolvers, 4th model was produced between 1895-1909 when 216,300 models we manufactured, and the 5th variation was known as the "perfected model" which was discontinued in 1911, and 15,000 revolver were produced. This revolver is marked in numerous places, reading "SMITH&WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS.U.S.A. - PAT'D JAN.24.65 - JULY11.65AUG.24.69.REISSUE JULY 25.71.MAY 11.80.JAN.5.82" on the top of the barrel rib, and serial number 298679 on the butt of the grip, on the back of the cylinder, and on the bottom of the top-break lever. Overall, this is a very fine example of a pre-1899 Smith & Wesson Double-Action .38. The pistol shows 80%+ blue'd finish retention, fantastic grips, and a nice naturally aged, uncleaned patina. Mechanically the revolver shows good condition, with a strong action, which is in good time, strong cylinder lock-up, and a good overall bore, with strong rifling, and only some darkness, which would clean out well. This revolver - Manufactured between 1884-95 qualifies as an Antique Hand Gun, and does NOT require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 298679.
