For your consideration in this lot is a 19th century South African Zulu war axe. The axe is crafted with a heavy iron head, forged onto a octagon rifle barrel butt. The head of the axe is decorated with inlaid brass accents, wrapping around the back of the butt, and running vertically on the axe head. The eye of the axe shows hand forged iron nails, which fasten the heavy head tightly to the haft of the axe. The handle of the axe is additionally adorned with hand stippled brass accents. Brass was a sought after alloy, brought to the South African people through Delogoa Bay by the Portuguese. Use of brass and copper was reserved for the likes of chiefs, and nobles. Overall, the axe shows very-good condition for age. The axe head is firmly set into place, but shows a small chip on the blade. The haft shows good condition. The axe measures approximately 25 1/2" long, without the additional length of leather lanyard, and 5 3/4" wide at the head.
