This is a parfleche dance war shield from the Southern Cheyenne Turtle Clan that dates to the late-20th Century. The piece shows a thick heavy Buffalo Bison Indian parfleche hide, which was wetted and stretched over bent stripped wood branch hoop with rawhide lacing ties. The front is covered in polychrome painted design showing a large green turtle with black outlining and horns and surrounded by four green circles, two bands with four rounded knobbed arms, and a band of green and yellow. The front shows two hide fringe with large Turkey feathers wrapped in red yarn. The back has a hide strap and the fringe is tied into place with two black trade beads. The piece is from the late 1900's and is in good condition. Measures overall 22" across and 35" L with top strap and feathers.
