This is an excellent hide/ leather rifle scabbard from the Southern Plains Native American Indians, attributed to be used with the Henry Lever Action Rifle. The scabbard shows a leather hide with oil stained and patina’d finish from honest antique, 1800’s use. The piece shows an exposed hide lacing, sewing the bottom edge together and adorning the opening. The bottom edge and top opening both have twisted hide fringe, a wonderful Indian attribution. The leather has a nice supple condition, with some stiffing at the ends, and the fringe is both soft and hard, with some pieces being cracked off and fragile. Henry and Winchester’s were often stolen off the soldier’s during battle and prized amongst warriors. Frontier and Indian scabbards of this early age are unusual and rare. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Measures 50”L with the fringe.
