The lot features a Spanish forged belt axe head from the 19th Century. Many of these Spanish belt axe heads have been mistakenly identified as being from the Fur Trade era in North America used by the American Indians of the 19th Century. Spain did not export axes during the fur trade period and these axe heads have only recently in the last several decades made their way into the hands of North American collectors. This example is marked “PINO” with an evergreen tree above. Pino meaning Pine in Spanish. Similar examples can be seen marked in the same way but with the name Olivo for olive. The piece shows a wide broad axe head with round elongated eyelet hole and forged molding at the top. Measures overall 5.75”L with a blade that is 4.25”L and the head is 2”W.
