This is an extremely rare Springfield .45-70 Trapdoor Carbine accessory, steel three piece cleaning rod with “headless shell extractor”, made to fit in the butt stock under the sliding door of the trapdoor butt plate of cavalry carbines. These rods and headless shell extractor are almost universally missing from these historical Indian Wars carbines. The rod is in excellent condition and the broken shell extractor retains both parts that screw together and fit inside the butt stock. Early .45-70 cases were prone to separate upon firing, with the forward portion of the shell remaining lodged in the chamber. This would render the arm unserviceable as a fresh cartridge could not be loaded into the chamber before the stuck remaining portion of the prior case was removed. This beautifully machined tool was made to perfectly fit the rifling in the bore of the carbine. It was inserted and pushed down the bore, where it would engage the stuck headless cartridge case and force it out through the breech. This was an essential tool often used in the heat of battle. It is supplied with a copy of the section of the Springfield Manual depicting the rod, headless case extractor, and text explaining its use. It is all in excellent, uncleaned condition.
