Featured in this lot are North Dakota Standing Rock Indian Reservation Photographs, circa 1870s to 1890s. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Kleinschmidt's collection included vintage photographs taken by noted photographers such as David F. Barry, Frank Fiske, Stephen Fansler, Orlando Scott Goff, F. Jay Haynes as well as many others. The collection included photos of early reservation life in the Dakota Territory. Fort Yates, North Dakota has a history that includes the establishment of a US Army post, the headquarters of the Standing Rock Indian Agency, and the burial site of Hunkpapa Sioux leader Sitting Bull. Photos include Dakota and Lakota people in ceremonial and every day attire, meat and hide drying racks, teepee dwellings, Anglo tourists, period stagecoaches. The nine (9) silver albumen and silver gelatin photographs are in amazing preserved condition, all have album mounting residue, slight tears noted at some corners. Smallest photo measures 2"W x 4.25L, largest is 3.75"W x 4.625"L.
