For your consideration in this lot is a collection of sterling silver Apostle tea spoons. Originally, Apostle spoons were given by people at the time of a baby’s baptismal—this is where the term "born with a silver spoon" comes from. This set of six is of St. Matthew. On the back of each spoon, the anchor and lion indicate the spoons are made of Sterling Silver .925 in Birmingham, England. The "d" mark indicates the spoons were made in 1903 and the maker’s mark was the initials AJB. Each spoon measures 4" and weighs from 5.3 grams to 5.5 grams. This set comes with a letter of provenance stating they were purchased in 1980 from Fluery's Antiques in Ireland.
