Offered in this lot is a Thai Buddhist Dharmapala Yamantaka (Yamantaka) Bronze Wall Hanging Dance Mask, circa early to mid 1900s. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far East Asian artifacts. This image of a wrathful protector of Buddhism would have been an awesome presence in the dimly lit interior of a monastery. Yamantaka is a violent aspect of the Bodhisattva Manjushri, who assumes this form to vanquish Yama, the god of death. Sometimes he is conceptualized as "conqueror of the lord of death". This bronze mask is in overall nice condition, oxidation marring noted. Rich patina observed throughout. Measures 9.5"W x 18.75"L x 4.5"D, weight 5lb, 4oz.
