Presented in this lot is the 1st Edition of "The Cherokee Strip" by George Rainey, 1933, Co-Operative Publishing Co., Guthrie, OKLA. The Cherokee Strip was a two and one-half mile wide piece of land running along the northern border of much of the Cherokee Outlet. It was the result of a surveying error. The whole of the Cherokee Outlet is often called the Cherokee Strip. The Cherokee Outlet, or Cherokee Strip, was located in what is now the state of Oklahoma. It was a 60-mile-wide (97 km) parcel of land south of the Oklahoma-Kansas border created in 1836. At the time of its creation, the Cherokee Outlet was about 225 miles (360 km) long. the United States obligated the Cherokees to move west of the Mississippi River to lands assigned them in Indian Territory (later Oklahoma). Their new lands included a 7.0-million-acre reservation and "a perpetual outlet west...as far west as the sovereignty of the United States" extended. Rainey was a first hand observer of the land boom in the Strip. He includes many black and white photographs, some of which he took himself. The book was used in the Oklahoma public school as a history text book for many years. George Rainey (1866-1940) was appointed as the first county clerk of “C” County, now Blaine County by Governor A.J. Seay of Oklahoma Territory when the Cheyenne-Arapahoe country was opened to settlement in 1892. Rainey made the run into the Cherokee Strip at its opening in 1893 and moved to Garfield County to again teach school. He served as Garfield County superintendent of schools (1904-1913) and served as Enid’s postmaster from 1921 to 1933. He was the author of many books, including several that were adopted as history textbooks for Oklahoma public schools.
